Who Is In Control?
"Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.” - 1 Chronicles 29:11
We live in a busy and stressful society. It has been said that this is:
The age of the half read page,
And the quick hash and the mad dash.
The bright night and the nerves tight,
The plane hop, and the brief stop,
The brain strain and the heart pain.
The cat naps till the spring snaps,
And the fun is done.
Surprisingly, according to psychologist and author Dr. Keith W. Schnert, the primary cause of stress is a lack of control over your circumstances of life. In a Holman-Rahe test for stress levels, the most stressful job is a health technician, followed by a waitress, then a nurse. The less control the worker had, the more stress developed. In a Swedish study to measure the amount of stress-related hormone, it was discovered that the earlier the participants boarded the train on the way to work, the less stress they experienced. Although they had a longer ride, those who boarded further down the track had little choice where to sit or stand.
We have so many things “on our plate” and so little time to accomplish it all; we often feel we are lacking control in our lives.
The Bible teaches that God is sovereign – that is, He is in control of all things. He has control over nature (Psalm 148:8); over history (Isaiah 14:26, 27); over the color of your eyes and hair; over the number of our days (Job 14:5).
Often we become desperate in the present or fearful of the future. Will God help me? Will God provide for me? Will He watch over my family? One of the primary reasons we can trust Him is that He is sovereign – in control of all things. We can have victory and rest in our lack of control, because we know the One who watches over us has control of all things.
The only thing God “chooses” not to control is our will (Joshua 24:15). We must surrender to His will and His heart to benefit from His sovereignty. Surrender your heart to Him today.
