The God You Can Know
Read Philippians 3:1-16.
Have you ever eagerly looked for someone in a crowd? Occasionally I have the task of picking someone up at the airport. Recently, on one of these occasions, I witnessed one of our soldiers coming home to his wife. I do not know how long he had been deployed or where, but the excitement of the loved ones waiting for him told me this reunion would be special.
As people exited the train that carried its passengers to the terminal, all eyes were glued to the crowd that was coming around the corner. As the soldier approached, his eyes met the eyes of his wife. No one else seemed to exist in all the world as they turned their faces to one another. The embrace was emotional and the reunion sweet.
When God turned His face toward you – in that moment of recognition, you knew that you were special to Him. As you reached out for Him and He embraced you, nothing else in the world seemed to matter. His forgiveness, His peace, His love made all the wrongs in life right. As is the case of a loving couple, our relationship with God is built on trust and love. The more we know someone, the more we are capable of loving them and the more we can trust them.
Paul says in Philippians 3:8, “More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.” As a believer I want to love God supremely and trust Him daily with my life. The best way to grow in these areas is not to know more about love or faith, but to know the object of our love and faith. God has truly revealed Himself in the Scriptures and through His Son. The most important thing about us is how well we know God.
