The Calamity Of The Wicked
“Better is the little that the righteous has
than the abundance of many wicked.
For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
but the LORD upholds the righteous.” - Psalm 37:16, 17
A young boy is sitting in an elementary school in Romania. In the 1970’s Romania was under the communist dictatorship of Ceausescu. That morning the military arrived and demanded all the children to go outside and line up. Standing in the snow, an officer threw a Bible on the ground. One by one, he demanded each child to spit on the Bible. The boy stood, so nervous he could barely move. Could he as a believer do this? What would he do? The girl who stood next to him was also a believer. When confronted by the officer, she stooped down and, with her knees in the snow, picked up the Bible and kissed it. Without warning or hesitation, the officer pulled out his revolver shot her in the head. The officers then left. The boy’s life was spared but his friend was gone.
We do not understand why God does not protect us all the same. Some are rescued and proclaim ”God is good.” Is He not also good to those who suffer trials? The Psalmist is clear: life may seem unfair, but one day, justice will prevail.
This passage concludes with a promise that God will support us through all our trials. Remember, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
