The Anchor Of The Soul
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.” - Hebrews 6:19
Why is hope so valuable? Can’t we live joyfully and peaceably without it? Consider the Hebrews 6 imagery of hope acting as an anchor of the soul. An anchor is used to s=teady a ship, to keep it from drifting and floating int troubled waters. When an anchor is “sure and steadfast’ it is well grounded, secure, something we can count on.
The we read that this “anchor” enters… behind the veil. In the temple the veil separated the holy place from the Holy of Holies, the sacred place that housed the ark of the covenant where God resided amongst His people, Israel.
Why are these images of an anchor and a veil mentioned together? A ship’s anchor digs into the ocean floor, and- as the imagery suggests-the anchor of hope digs deep into our souls. At the same time, the ship’s anchor hooks itself onto the ocean floor while still being strongly attached to the ship itself. Similarly, the other end of the chain on our anchor of hope is attached behind the veil, wrapped securely around our Savior, indicating that our hope is attached to Christ. Jesus is the anchor of our souls.
