Drawn Into God’s Holiness
"And one called out to another and said, 'Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.' Then I said, 'Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.'" - Isaiah 6:3, 5
The holiness of God is the foundation to our ability to place our faith in God. If He is not holy and perfect, He would not be reliable – He could change His mind or simply go back on His Word.
His holiness is also an attribute that greatly helps us see our standing with God. Dr. Bo Heflin, professor of Old Testament at Southwestern Seminary often said, “The more we are drawn into the holiness of God, the better we see ourselves.”
In my former church, our youth minister had reached two teenagers – a brother and sister for Christ. Soon afterward their mom began to attend church, and she too received the Lord. We worked on the dad, Mike, for quite some time. One Sunday morning, amidst recent trials in his life, God reached out and touched Mike’s heart. During the invitation, he walked forward, fell on his knees at the altar and began crying, almost uncontrollably. I tried to console him, but he could not stop weeping. Finally, he did manage to communicate that he was receiving Christ into his life. A couple of weeks later, I had a chance to follow-up on his decision over lunch. He explained to me that he had not cried, publicly or privately, since he was a child. Deep emotions were not something he normally felt, or that he expressed. However, something liberating happened to him that morning. He had been drawn into the holiness of God. He realized what a sinner he was. It became so clear to him how his sin nailed Jesus to the cross. “I knew I was not worthy. He is God and I am just a man. Even now I can’t talk about it without breaking down and crying.” Even in the restaurant, Mike’s emotions were on the brink of breaking. That Sunday morning, Mike really saw who God was and then He was able to see who he was.
Can you see God clearly today? Have you been drawn into His holiness of late? Anytime we see ourselves a little self-righteous, too important, or simply not able to find repentance for sin, we need to sit alone with God and see Him in His holiness. It is there we will return to a humble state. There is no one like our God. Holy – yet He still loves us, wants us and forgives us. We can trust Him!
