The Promise Of God’s Blessing Requires Obedience
“Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time.” - Deuteronomy 4:39-40
As Moses is about to reintroduce the Israelites to God’s law, he remembers what God has done. He says there is no one like God. No one has done the things that God has done. He looks at creation (Deuteronomy 4:32); God speaking from a fire (v 33); taking a nation (Israel) from the midst of another nation (Egypt). Why? So that the people would know that the Lord is God (v 39). The question then is how do we receive the blessings from this almighty God? The answer is obedience (v 40).
I like to think of God’s will for our lives as being a path of blessing. As we stay on this path; we receive all the blessings God has for us. If we veer off into the wilderness, we will miss those blessings.
Obedience is required to walk the path of blessing. Obedience is always made in the atmosphere of struggle. The key is to realize that every step of obedience is a step of faith. God speaks to us through His Word. We then either believe it or disbelieve it. If we truly believe, we take action to obey. Each time God asks us to do something, a question arises in our hearts: “Am I better off obeying God than going my own way?” The answer to that question will determine if we enter (or stay) in God’s path of blessing for our lives or if we begin to wander from that path. Never be offended by God’s Word. Always receive it. The promises for obedience are countless. It is all dependent on us listening, believing and responding in obedience.
The next time God convicts your heart to act – just trust Him and obey.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to be sensitive to Your Spirit today. I know I have not arrived. I know You want to speak into my life as I read Your Word. Help me to love You enough to listen and trust You enough to obey.
